| So this has been an issue for many a gamer, and I am no exception. Through the years, I've owned about 6 or so N64 controllers and blown through all of them, so now I want to go back and try to fix them. Of course, the controller works perfectly except for (can you guess it?)...the joystick. So I took the damn things apart and started tinkering around, but it seems like it's too late for all of them since the plastic on the inside has been virtually destroyed due to wear.
So, to the point. Does anyone here have experience in this situation and know what I could due to either a) replace the joystick (without paying money for a replacement part) or b) find an alternative method of controlling the character on Zelda?
The joystick functions on sensors detecting the movement of bars on two wheels (one moved by up/down motion, the other by left/right), and as more bars pass then the amount of impulses sent to the machine increases. So, if you guys can just think of a way to get the wheel to move either more swiftly or have the controller react to the movement more severely...well, then you'd be a better man than myself.

| If you take a couple pieces of copper wire, stick it where the wheels normally connect to, and run AC current through them at 128m and 128n hertz, it will be like you're holding the joystick at (m-32,n-32) in a plane (the stick normally stays within a circle of radius 8, so I dunno what'll happen if you're outside that). How far the stick is in that direction is controlled by the voltage.
(Don't believe a word I said. I was making it up for fun.)
You might be able to make your own joystick. That'd be a neat project.

| *Laughs quietly to himself* when I first started reading that, I just saw the "copper wire" part and started laughing because that was actually an idea I had for fixing it, though through a much more simplistic method: wrap it around the corroded sections in order to fill in space.
Those Nintendo engineers should be shot for making the joystick with cheap plastic. Oh well, good way to coerce gamers into paying extra money...I know I did.

| K well... Rip off the top so you only have hte bottom part (the important part) then attach a screw to it. Screws are nice and sturdy, and work just as good as joysticks Like what I did with my RC car... I broke the sticks ont he controller, so I attached screws to it lol | |

| K. Demo sits around talking to us... You really expect him to have money? Now you see, I have it all figured out. Let's say there's an emergency, like, my N64 controllers break... I have ultra long hair. I could start a fundraiser, and since I live in Alberta, everyone would pay like 20 bucks each just to see my hair go. 20x~200 people who would see it go... That's 4000 dollars. Enough for like, 3000 N64 controllers. | |

| I have these pie tins sitting in my garage that I can sell at the junk yard for about $200...
I would probably just buy a new controller (I found a third-party one that looked pretty decent for about $10), but that ruins the fun of rebuilding the old one. I've gone through two controllers now, I've got three more to test ideas on (by the way, forcing it into submission and using hot glue does not work...just in case you guys were considering trying that).

| You could try banging it, thats how I got my fan to work. I had bought it from the store and it went kaput so I got mad and threw it on the floor. Low and behold it came back to life. | |

Naw. Banging a fan would just be painful, besides, Ciph doesn't come across as the circumsized type of guy.

| So I am reading this a 11:12 and my easily amused level increases by 50% when I am tired. So when I saw that bunny with a pancake on its head, I could stop laughing for almost -42 seconds. | |

It's actually an illusionary technique (Yay, apostrophe works now). This causes an amount of cognitive dissonance (cognitive being sensory, in this case) and enables me to take advantage of them in any manner that I wish. Of course, this manner strictly depends on the situation. Were it Cip, I would take his money. Were it Lily, I would steal her N64 controllers. Were it Elmo, I would sex him, etc.
